Going to Camp
When you are going to camp you can look forward to the excitement of Camp. At Cub and Scout meetings, you will learn how to pitch (put up) and strike (take down) a tent, you will also learn how to look after the equipment.
What do I take to camp?
Whilst it would be nice to take the contents of your bedroom from home to camp, it is not practical or possible. Each Beaver, Cub or Scout needs to take their kit in a rucksack with everything marked so that they can identify their own kit.
Standard Kit List
- Full uniform including neckerchief and woggle (to be worn to and from the camp unless told otherwise by a Leader).
- Thick jumper or sweatshirt + spares.
- T-shirts.
- Trousers and shorts – avoid jeans as these are not very good when they get wet as they take too long to dry.
- Handkerchiefs or tissues.
- Socks and spares.
- Underclothes.
- Tracksuit or pyjamas for sleeping in.
- Wash bag to include small towel, soap, flannel, comb, toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Plastic bag for dirty or wet clothes.
- Mess bag containing a tea towel, plate, bowl, mug, knife, fork and spoon. Plastic things are best.
- Cagoule or wet weather outfit.
- Hiking boots or other waterproof footwear.
- Wellies.
- Trainers.
- Sleeping bag.
- Roll mat.
- Camp blanket.
- Torch.

You must not take radios, electronic games, mobile phones, personal stereos, or knives (scouts can bring knives as long as they hand it in to a scout leader).
Mess Bags Whilst at camp you need a ‘mess bag’ containing a tea towel, plate, bowl, mug, knife, fork and spoon. Plastic things are best.. This bag is kept in the eating area so it must have your name on it. Also, the contents should be marked in someway as they can cause arguments if two people have the same ones.
Camp Blankets Many Scouts have been Cubs and many Cubs have been Beavers and have badges they have earned. These badges are taken off the uniform and sewn on to a blanket which is known as a ‘Camp Blanket’. This is worn as a poncho at campfires to keep your back warm and to form part of your bedding. You can sew badges from camps you attend on here and it makes a visible diary of your life through the Scout Movement. Making a camp blanket does not take a long time, nor does it cost a lot of money. Here’s how to make one:
- Get an old single blanket and fold in half length wise.
- Mark the centre of the blanket and make a shall hole large enough only for your head to get through.
- Using blanket stitch, sew around the neck hole.
- Try the blanket on and if necessary, turning each corner so that the blanket does not drag on the floor when you are standing up. Turning each corner in 20cm should be enough.
- Decorate your blanket with Cub or Beaver badges as you wish.
